Every once in a while some companies just get in a bit too deep and can't seem to dig themselves out. Or maybe they had some kind of disaster that get the shareholders running for the exists. Either way these companies see their stock prices plummet. At that point in time various things can happen.
- They can go broke and the stock becomes totally worthless.
- They can get some financing or a bailout of some kind and there is once again renewed interest in the company.
- They can get bought out for dollars or a share swap.
- Or they can maybe issue more stock for money and hope for the best.
Either way there are winners and there are loosers. If you have been long on a stock that was in the dollars and is now in the pennies you are on the loosing end. But if you happen to buy the stock for pennies at the bottom and things do turn around, you are in the winners seat.
